This article analyses Hosoda Mamoru’s anime film Summer Wars (2009) through its rearticulation of the lonely male otaku. A highly debated issue in and outside Japan, otaku community fans shares with nerds associations obsessive interests, technology, lack social skills. provides a counternarrative to such discourses by setting up story interpersonal ties an at centre. Furthermore, displaces this rural thus recontextualising otaku’s typical technological urban environment relocating one them amidst large family historical continuity.
